Start of the season: Tobias Wolff is the new director of the Leipzig Opera

The Leipzig Opera is entering the coming season with a new director. Tobias Wolff officially took up his post on Monday. He succeeds Ulf Schirmer, who said goodbye this summer with the "Wagner 22" festival, among other things.

Wolff wants to reposition the opera house in the city together with his team. To this end, he is planning a variety of new discussion formats and opportunities for the audience to look behind the scenes of opera, musical comedy and ballet. “We are very keen on this city,” said Wolff when presenting the schedule for the 2022/23 season.

There are five premieres on the program at the opera. With "Undine" or "Othello" there are substances that are more topical than expected in view of the crises in the world. After the Wagner Festival this summer, the Wagner repertoire will be scaled back a little in the next season. However, some plays such as "Meistersinger von Nürnberg" and "Lohengrin" are to remain on the repertoire.

The ballet has three premieres. The Musical Comedy, a newly renovated musical and operetta house, is planning four new plays.
