State of Jalisco A woman dies in Mexico, bleeding to death from a shark attack

A young Mexican mother died from a shark attack in a tourist bay in the western state of Jalisco, state authorities said last Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday in Melaque Bay in the municipality of Cihuatlán when a woman was swimming with her five-year-old son towards an inflatable platform that was about 25 meters from the shore of the beach.

In the middle of dozens of bathers the shark appeared, which went towards the 26-year-old woman and bit her on the left leg.

Some media claim that the mother managed to get the child to safety in the water park before being attacked by the shark.

The director of Civil Protection Firefighters of Cihuatlán, Rafael Araiza, told The Associated Press that despite the quick action of the rescue personnel, the woman could not be saved because the shark cut off a "section of her leg up to the height of of the hip", which caused massive bleeding.

The young mother lived in a town in the municipality of Cihuatlán. After the attack, the authorities began searching for the shark to capture or hunt it, but so far it has not been sighted, Araiza said.

Given this situation, the authorities agreed on Sunday to maintain the alert and prohibit entry to the beaches of Barra de Navidad Bay, Melaque Bay and Cuastecomates Bay in the state of Jalisco, the official said.
