The driver of a truck that crashed into a security barrier near the White House is arrested

The US authorities have arrested this Monday night the driver of a truck that crashed into the security barriers in Lafayette Square, next to the White House grounds, according to a spokesman for the US Secret Service.

"There have been no injuries to Secret Service or White House personnel, and the cause and manner of the accident remain under investigation," Anthony Guglielmi, the US Secret Service's communications chief, said on Twitter. "The driver may have intentionally hit the security barriers," he added.

A witness to the events has told Reuters that investigators have found a Nazi swastika flag that apparently came from inside the truck.

Some roads and pedestrian crossings in the area have been sealed as a result of the incident and the Hay Adams Hotel has been evacuated at the request of the Secret Service, reports the 'Washington Post', citing a hotel official.

The WUSA chain, which has spoken with a witness, ensures that the truck collided up to two times with the security barriers of Lafayette Square.
