Thuringia: 230,000 people on their way to the 369th Onion Market in Weimar

Weimar (dpa/th) - According to the city of Weimar, around 230,000 visitors were attracted to the 369th Onion Market at the weekend. That is almost twice as many as in the previous year. According to the city, Friday and Sunday were particularly popular this year, thanks to sunshine and drought.

"We can look back on a successful 369th Weimar Onion Market," said Lord Mayor Peter Kleine (independent) on Sunday. He is pleased that this year "a comparatively carefree folk festival" could be celebrated again this year together with guests and dealers.

From the point of view of the organizers, keeping the stage closing earlier than 10 p.m. had proved its worth. The police, emergency services and regulatory office only registered a few operations during the market days. This means that the onion market was much more relaxed compared to the years before Corona.

After three days, the traders also drew a very positive balance of what is probably the best-known Thuringian folk festival this year. "We are still wrapping onion panicles at the moment to meet all customer requests," said Heiko Pfau, according to the city. He is one of around 40 onion farmers from Helderungen (Kyffhäuserkreis) who advertised their products on the market.

The onion market in the classic city is Thuringia's oldest city and market festival. The previous visitor record is around 360,000 people.
