Thuringia: 45 million euros for Thuringian water research

Jena (dpa/th) - Thuringia's research institutes will receive 45 million euros over the next nine years for research into sustainable water supply. With the help of the money from the Federal Ministry of Research, among other things, new technologies for the analysis and purification of water are to be developed, as the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) Jena announced on Tuesday.

However, it is not only about innovations on the subject of water, but also about cooperation with civil society. Even if the subject of water is increasingly present in the media, there is often still a lack of convincing offers for imparting water knowledge and for the participation of broad sections of the population in the upcoming upheavals in the water industry, it said.

The FSU had joined forces with the Ernst Abbe University Jena and the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems in Hermsdorf to form the "Thuringian Water Innovation Cluster". This is now being promoted. In total, more than 20 sub-projects are being processed. Interdisciplinary work should also be carried out - for example, natural scientific water research, data science and sociology are involved.
