Thuringia: 95 events at Yiddish Summer

Weimar (dpa/th) - This year's "Yiddish Summer Weimar" festival is searching for traces of connections between Yiddish, Greek and Turkish music and culture. From July 14 to August 20, around 100 international artists are expected to attend concerts, spontaneous performances, courses and seminars, as the organizers announced on Friday. The 95 announced events do not only focus on the Festival Center Weimar. Performances in Erfurt, Eisenach, Apolda, Altenburg, Leipzig, Niederzimmern, Tiefurt, Holzdorf, Kapellendorf and Gera are also planned.

The festival also sets political accents. A concert "Songs for Babyn Yar - Memories of a Genocide" is planned for August 6th. During World War II, on September 29 and 30, 1941, German police officers, Wehrmacht soldiers, SS men and local helpers murdered more than 33,000 Jewish residents of Kyiv. On August 12, the works and fates of Soviet Yiddish poets who were imprisoned and murdered in the Stalin era will be presented with readings, lectures, music and film.
