Thuringia: ADAC: To start the holiday before traffic jams on Thuringia's highways

Erfurt (dpa/th) - At the start of the school holidays, drivers in Thuringia must expect traffic jams. Especially on Thursday and Friday afternoon, the streets in the state could get fuller, as the ADAC Hessen-Thuringia announced on Tuesday. "On both days, travel meets commuter traffic," said Wolfgang Herda, traffic expert at ADAC, on Tuesday. "In addition, many Christmas shoppers are to be expected in the inner cities."

There should be a lot of traffic on the streets until Saturday noon. "It will be quiet on Christmas Day, while travelers will have to prepare for return traffic on Monday," it said. Traffic jams can then occur, especially on the Autobahn 4 around Erfurt and around the Hermsdorfer Kreuz. Depending on the weather, more time must also be planned for the journey to ski areas.

"Since almost all travel restrictions due to Corona have been lifted, car trips abroad are easier than in the previous year," said the ADAC. However, holiday trips are significantly more expensive because of the price increases. Therefore, travel will not reach the level of the pre-corona period. "Nevertheless, drivers have to be prepared for delays."

The ADAC recommends good preparation. The car should be "fit for winter", blankets and thermos flasks with tea could help bridge longer waiting times in the cold.
