Thuringia: Almost every fifth deceased in Thuringia succumbed to cancer

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In Thuringia, more than 6700 people died in 2021 as a result of cancer. Malignant neoplasms were responsible for almost a fifth (19.3 percent) of the total of 34,830 deaths, as reported by the State Statistical Office on the Friday before World Cancer Day on February 4th. A year earlier, the proportion was 22.7 percent. Figures for 2022 are not yet available.

According to the statisticians, those who died in the Free State in 2021 were on average 78.8 years old. Men and women who died from cancer died an average of 4.6 years earlier. Their average age at death was 74.2 years. 40 percent of those who died from cancer were 80 years and older. The digestive organs were affected in more than a third of the malignant tumors.
