Thuringia: Anti-Semitic statements are often not classified as such

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Despite the aim of stepping up the fight against hatred of Jews, the police and judiciary in Thuringia have not classified many obviously anti-Semitic statements as such in recent months. It happened, for example, that a graffiti like "Juden-Jena" was treated as part of statements in the football scene or as a general political statement, said the managing director of the Federal Association of Research and Information Centers on Anti-Semitism, Benjamin Steinitz, on Tuesday in Erfurt .

That is unacceptable. "In order to successfully combat anti-Semitism, it must also be named." Many Jews in Germany have now lost confidence in the law enforcement authorities and are therefore no longer reporting anti-Semitic attacks.

Since January 2021, the Antisemitism Research and Information Center has been documenting anti-Jewish incidents in Bavaria via its own reporting office. The Thuringian office is supported by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and is based in Jena. According to her own statements, she registered a total of 212 anti-Semitic attacks and statements last year. These included three direct attacks that occurred in connection with the protests against corona protection measures.
