Thuringia: Around 26 million euros for chemistry research at the University of Jena

Jena (dpa/th) - Around 26 million euros are going to the University of Jena for research on light-based green hydrogen and complex biosystems. The German Research Foundation (DFG) is using the money to support two of the university's special research areas for a further four years, as the Friedrich Schiller University announced on Friday.

On the one hand, the "CataLight" project is funded, which focuses on the research and environmentally friendly production of solar fuels. Sunlight should be converted to "green" hydrogen with the help of chemical processes. The aim is to design solar energy converters in such a way that ecologically questionable, rare materials such as ruthenium, platinum or rhodium are no longer needed.

In the "ChemBioSys" project, 22 individual projects are also concerned with researching the complex communication paths and interrelationships between different organisms and their environment. The focus is on so-called natural substances, which according to researchers are considered the "chemical language of nature".
