Thuringia: artist duo stretches netting over the Krämerbrücke

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The art installation for the Krämerbrückenfest comes this year from an Erfurt artist duo. The media artist Susanna Hanna and the architect and freelance artist Kai Siegel have prevailed against 19 other concepts with their proposal "Transition", as a spokeswoman for the city announced on Friday in Erfurt. The transparent and colorful mesh is to be hung over the bridge in downtown Erfurt on June 14th. From then on it will hover over the Krämerbrücke for a week and use the colors red and green to represent opposites as well as dialogue and acceptance of different positions.

The art installation has been an important element of the Krämerbrückenfest since 2014. Colorful umbrellas, boats, balloons, towels, flags and quotes from poets were already on display. The festival is considered the largest old town festival in Thuringia. Most recently, it attracted more than 110,000 people to the state capital in 2019 with its extensive cultural and music programme. In recent years, the festival could not take place in its usual form due to the corona pandemic.

This year, knights, jugglers, concerts and much more are on the program of the 45th Krämerbrückenfest. The performance of the Berlin folk band Mighty Oaks should be one of the highlights. But music of almost all genres and from all corners of the world also belongs to the old town festival. With the New Orleans Music Festival, one focus is on international swing and jazz. As every year, the center is the medieval Krämerbrücke. The character Till Eulenspiegel will open the festival with a play. There is also a special children's program, a medieval market, cabaret and many inner courtyards are open from June 17th to 19th and offer a program.
