Thuringia: Association: damage in the millions for car thefts in Thuringia

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to insurance information, total damage of almost 2.8 million euros arose in Thuringia last year when cars were stolen. As the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) announced on Monday, 134 cars with comprehensive insurance were stolen in Bavaria in 2021, which means an increase of 5.5 percent compared to 2020. According to the GDV, the average value per stolen car was just under 20,700 euros. In 2020 it was around 14,000 euros.

When it comes to the value of stolen cars, Thuringia is among the top group among the federal states, only in Berlin, Hamburg and Hesse were the stolen cars more expensive. The national average for a stolen car was around 19,000 euros.

According to the GDV vehicle theft report, Thuringia remains one of the safest federal states for car owners. Statistically, there are 0.1 thefts per 1,000 cars with comprehensive insurance in the Free State, and the national average is 0.2. For comparison: In Berlin, 2 out of 1000 cars were stolen.

According to the GDV, 9,805 cars were stolen nationwide last year. According to the association, this is the lowest value since theft statistics were introduced. Around 100,000 cars were stolen every year in the mid-1990s.
