Thuringia: car catches fire in the tunnel: the driver puts it out himself

Jena (dpa/th) - In the Jagdberg tunnel on Autobahn 4 near Jena, a car caught fire on Wednesday night. According to the highway police inspection, a witness had drawn the 23-year-old driver's attention to the danger. The young man from Gelsenkirchen acted with quick-wittedness, steered the vehicle into a breakdown bay in the tunnel and used a fire extinguisher that he had carried with him. Since he was unable to bring the flames under control with this, he used another fire extinguisher from the breakdown bay. He was able to put out the fire before the fire department arrived. Firefighters cleaned the road. The tunnel was closed in both directions for the duration of the operation. The police estimated the property damage at 8500 euros.
