Thuringia: Carius resigns as DRK President in Thuringia

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The former Thuringian minister and state parliament president Christian Carius resigned his office as president of the DRK state association at the turn of the year. The German Red Cross in Erfurt announced on Monday that the 46-year-old Carius had withdrawn from this voluntary position for personal reasons. Until the new election of the Presidium, the previous DRK Vice President Gerhard Schneider will take over the office.

The former CDU politician was Minister of Transport in Thuringia from 2009 to 2014 and then President of the state parliament until autumn 2018. He took over the presidency of the DRK seven years ago.

The DRK has around 60,000 members in Thuringia, including 6,000 active members. It is part of the civil protection in Thuringia. In addition to rescue services, water and mountain rescue services, the association also runs social facilities such as kindergartens and nursing homes.
