Thuringia: CDU wants annual report on attacks on rescue workers

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The opposition CDU parliamentary group is demanding an annual report from the state government on acts of violence against rescue workers in Thuringia. The number of crimes against police officers, firefighters or paramedics has been high in the Free State for years, said CDU domestic politician Raymond Walk on Saturday in Erfurt. "What we need here is an annual comprehensive overview based on the example of Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, which tells us who the perpetrators are and why they act as they do."

In 2021 alone, there were 1,182 crimes against police officers in Bavaria, including 311 physical attacks. There were 195 injuries, Walk said, citing information from the Home Office. "An attack with a kettle, biting and spitting attacks, resistance and insults at a traffic stop and even beatings - these are incidents from this February alone," said the deputy.

It's about protecting those "who protect us and who hold their heads for us every day". A detailed picture of the situation could help combat the causes of attacks on rescue workers. So far, the ministry has only provided information about this in the case of inquiries from the state parliament.
