Thuringia: Circuit manufacturer invests in plant in Erfurt

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The Belgian microchip manufacturer Melexis is expanding the capacity of its Erfurt site. Erfurt-based Melexis GmbH announced on Monday that around five million euros would be invested in new test systems and packaging machines this year. The company is reacting to the rapidly growing international demand for semiconductors, including for sensor technology in cars.

Melexis develops circuits, but does not produce them itself. The silicon wafers with the chips are often manufactured at the neighboring company X-Fab, said a Melexis spokeswoman. Tests and packaging are then taken over by Melexis again.

250 people are currently employed in Erfurt. In the past five years, around 30 jobs have been added in the areas of development, quality assurance and logistics. The state capital has a long tradition as a location for the semiconductor industry.

According to its own information, the Melexis Group achieved record sales of over 640 million euros in the past financial year. Over 1,700 people are employed at 19 locations worldwide.
