Thuringia: Commission: Proposals for constituency layouts

Erfurt (dpa/th) - A new commission of experts is to present proposals for a redesign of the constituencies in Thuringia. The Thuringian state parliament cleared the way for the establishment of this commission on Wednesday. The background to this is a regulation in the state electoral law, according to which constituencies must be reorganized if they deviate from the average population of the constituency by more than 25 percent.

This was already the case in Erfurt, which is why the state parliament passed a new layout on Wednesday: the Möbisburg-Rhoda district is moving from the Erfurt III constituency to the Erfurt IV constituency.

MEPs from several parliamentary groups pointed out that in the future, several constituencies will be affected by the 25 percent rule, which is why a fundamental reform is necessary.

Green MEP Madeleine Henfling said the commission should come up with a proposal that would ensure that constituencies were evenly populated. "The deviations are now significant in many constituencies." However, the reform should only be implemented in the coming legislative period - on the basis of the Commission's proposals.
