Thuringia: Communicating GDR history: Projects continue to be funded

Erfurt (dpa/th) - At Thuringian schools, teaching GDR history and dealing with the consequences of the SED dictatorship will continue to be promoted. The state student representatives and Minister of Education Helmut Holter (left) agreed on the continuation of a corresponding agreement on Wednesday.

This means that pupils at secondary schools can continue to realize their own projects in history and social studies lessons, the ministry said. So they could learn from the SED dictatorship history for the present. Corresponding projects are said to be supported with up to 500 euros. For example, schools could invite contemporary witnesses or speakers.

The phenomena of GDR history can be authentically experienced by schoolchildren at numerous Thuringian learning locations between Suhl and Teistungen, said Minister of Education Holter. "Students in Thuringia design their own lessons and projects to deal with the history of the GDR. This is unique in Germany and develops critical judgment."

The spokeswoman for the state student council, Lotta Moraweck, said: "We find that it is precisely this independent selection of projects, in which, for example, personal stories of a person from the GDR era are told, that makes learning more varied and easier."
