Erfurt (dpa/th) - The Thuringian Constitutional Court is dealing with a referendum initiated by the AfD against mandatory vaccinations. The Thuringian state government has applied for the inadmissibility of the referendum to be declared, said the highest Thuringian court on Monday. According to the court, the AfD wants the Thuringian state constitution to be changed and a passage added that says that nobody should be “directly or indirectly forced to vaccinate”.
The state government, on the other hand, considers the referendum to be inadmissible because the envisaged constitutional amendment is not the responsibility of the states, but is assigned to the federal government. The Thuringian Constitutional Court announced that it would like to make a decision on the case next year.
The Thuringian AfD around its state party and parliamentary group leader Björn Höcke was classified by the state protection of the constitution as a secured extremist endeavor. In the corona pandemic, she spoke out vehemently against many of the prescribed corona protection measures and criticized the vaccination campaign.
