Thuringia: Customs controls 125 fitness and sports studios

Erfurt (dpa/th) - More than 120 owners of fitness and sports studios in Thuringia and southwest Saxony have received a visit from customs. In five cases, indications were found that employees were not receiving the statutory minimum wage, the main customs office in Erfurt announced on Thursday. More than 70 customs officers from the financial control of illegal work were on duty from Monday to Friday last week.

A total of 82 studios in Thuringia and 43 in southwest Saxony - where the Erfurt main customs office is also responsible - were checked. Customs interviewed workers and checked business documents, it said. The main issues involved were the proper payment of the minimum wage of 9.82 euros per hour, the illegal receipt of social benefits or the residence status when foreigners were employed.
