Thuringia: Destruction of memorial trees: reward for information

Weimar (dpa/th) - The city of Weimar wants to support the search for perpetrators after the destruction of memorial trees for concentration camp victims in Buchenwald with a reward. For tips that lead to the perpetrator, 10,000 euros should be paid, as announced by the city administration in Weimar on Thursday. Information should be sent to the Weimar Police Inspectorate. "This barbaric and cowardly act of destruction must not remain without consequences for those who committed it," said Mayor Peter Kleine (independent).

According to Kleine, the city also supports the procurement and planting of replacement trees. According to the city, the sawed-off memorial trees were planted in 2015 as part of a "1000 beeches" project. Each tree received a plaque commemorating different groups of victims - including children - or individual prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp. The memorial trees have been planted along the death march route from Buchenwald since 1999. There had already been damage in 2019 and 2020.
