Thuringia: disciplinary action against the mayor of Bad Lobenstein

Bad Lobenstein/Meiningen (dpa/th) - The case of the controversial and temporarily ousted mayor of Bad Lobenstein, Thomas Weigelt, is coming to court. The legal supervisory authority of the Saale-Orla district had brought a disciplinary action against the independent local politician after the end of their investigation, as the district office confirmed on Monday. MDR Thuringia had previously reported about it. The proceedings against Weigelt are being conducted before the administrative court in Meiningen.

The mayor was temporarily suspended from office at the end of August. The local politician had previously been accused of physically attacking a journalist at a market festival that made headlines nationwide. In his own words, the mayor felt provoked by the journalist, but denied an attack.

The district office accuses him of other misconduct according to its own statements. In total, there are six violations of official duties, including the defamation of constitutional bodies and the financial damage to the city, it said. Should the misconduct be confirmed in court, Weigelt would have to vacate his post.
