Thuringia: DRK: further strengthen first aid in schools

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The German Red Cross (DRK) Thuringia has called for strengthening first aid in schools. In emergency situations, every second is crucial. That is why it is not important who is helping, but that there is help, the DRK said on the occasion of World First Aid Day this Saturday. Even children could provide effective support in emergency situations. "School as a place of learning and living must become safer," said Susan Leib, state director of the Thuringian Youth Red Cross.

According to the German Statutory Accident Insurance, the number of school accidents nationwide was around 37 accidents per 1000 students last year, almost twice as high as the number of work accidents with around 20 per 1000 full-time employees. So that children and young people know how best to react in an emergency, it is important to familiarize them with first aid measures at an early stage and, above all, regularly, Leib explained.

In Thuringia, there has been a "revival" program in schools since 2015, with modules that build on one another from the 7th grade onwards. The Thuringian aid organizations had developed a training guide together with the Ministry of Education.
