Oberhof (dpa/th) - The botanical Rennsteig Garden in Oberhof has again attracted fewer guests this season. Around 40,000 visitors looked at the plant areas from the end of April to November, as managing director Frank Meyer said on Tuesday at the end of the season. That is not only less than in the years before the pandemic, but “even less” than in the previous season. Significantly fewer guests came, especially in the hot summer, which was a heavy blow to the business.
Normally, 50,000 to 70,000 people would come every year to see high mountain flora from all over the world in the 7,000 hectare, park-like facility. 4000 species - from the Andean cushion from South America, silver cushion from New Zealand to the Chinese ornamental gentian - grow there. This is made possible by the special microclimate at an altitude of 800 meters at this point in the Thuringian Forest. The alpine and hardy perennials are now prepared for the winter in a slightly different way. For this, the plants, which are not expected to be completely covered by the snow, will have a sun protection built in.
