Thuringia: Fewer abortions in Thuringia

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In Thuringia, the number of abortions continues to decrease. Last year there were 2,846 abortions in the Free State, 174 fewer than in the previous year, as the State Statistical Office announced on Monday in Erfurt. That is a decrease of 5.8 percent. Across Germany there were 94,596 abortions, 5.4 percent fewer than in 2020.

According to the statisticians, 1934 Thuringian women were single at the time of the procedure. 101 women were younger than 18 years, it said. This is an increase of 5.2 percent in this age group within a year.

Most abortions (96.8 percent) were reported as outpatients last year - 1,415 in a gynecological practice and 1,320 outpatients in the hospital. The Thuringian Greens had recently criticized that the contact points for abortions in the Free State were not fully recorded. In some cities there is only one practice that does demolitions - and whether there is actually a corresponding contact point in every district remains questionable.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of contact points for abortions has fallen by 40 percent over the past 20 years. According to the Greens, the German Medical Association lists appropriate practices and clinics nationwide, but this is not complete. In some regions of Thuringia, information about contact points would only be passed on orally.
