Thuringia: Fretterode process could end in August

Erfurt (dpa/th) - After almost a year, the Fretterode trial for an attack on two journalists in front of the Mühlhausen district court is coming to an end. According to the current planning of the responsible chamber, there could be a judgment in the proceedings at the end of August, a spokesman for the court said on request. Before that, the public prosecutor and the defense were supposed to hold their pleas in mid-August. "However, it cannot be ruled out that a planned process will change in an ongoing process," said the spokesman. The process began in September 2021.

The public prosecutor's office in Mühlhausen accuses the two defendants of attacking two journalists in the Fretterode region in northern Thuringia in April 2018. The reporters are said to have initially fled in their car, but were then caught up by the attackers. The two journalists were seriously injured in the attack. Both defendants had already been assigned to the right-wing extremist scene in the past - and confirmed this themselves by providing information during the trial. The defendants had partially admitted to the crime at the start of the trial, but stated that they had acted in a kind of self-defense.
