Thuringia: Hashtags and social criticism: youth clubs in Weimar

Weimar (dpa/th) - Theater youth clubs from Germany are showing their productions from (today) Sunday at the 31st federal meeting in Weimar. Around 200 up-and-coming actors from Berlin, Kassel, Karlsruhe, Cottbus and Bielefeld are expected to attend the festival week. Their productions had previously been accepted by a specialist jury and are to be staged during the five-day meeting.

The ensembles deal critically with social media, role models, conspiracy theories, racism and National Socialism. 35 youth theaters had applied to take part in the festival with their own productions. The program also includes workshops, talks and discussions.

The festival is organized by the Bundesverband Theaterpädagogik (BuT) and has been held annually in a different federal state since 1990. The Stellwerk, as a young theater of the German National Theater in Weimar, is organizing the 31st edition of the National Meeting of Youth Clubs at Theaters this year together with the DNT. Finally, on October 7th, there will be a big flash mob on the Stéphane-Hessel-Platz in Weimar.

Theater youth clubs not only enable young people to act, but also to come out of themselves, to network and to practice exchange and understanding, said theater teacher Louisa Grote from stellwerk weimar. It therefore makes sense for the theaters to invest more in youth work in the future, which has suffered massively from the corona pandemic.
