Thuringia: Holiday start noticeable on the motorway and at train stations

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The first holidaymakers set off on vacation on Saturday after the last day of school. The traffic is flowing without any problems, "but you can clearly see the holiday crowd in both directions," said a spokesman for the highway police with a view of the Autobahn 9 in front of his window. Overall, the number of vehicles on Thuringia's motorways is higher than usual.

The ADAC Hessen-Thüringen announced in the middle of the week that there would be heavy traffic jams on numerous German autobahns. Since not only in Thuringia, but also in Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Bremen and Lower Saxony there will be no more school from Monday, it will be full on the trunk roads. Heavy travel is to be expected during the summer holidays on Fridays between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. According to the ADAC, the risk of traffic jams is particularly high on the access roads to the low mountain ranges, the local recreation areas and lake landscapes.

According to Deutsche Bahn, an “expectably high volume of traffic” was also observed at the train stations in the country. However, this is comparable to that of the past weekends during the validity of the 9-euro ticket.
