Thuringia: Honorary doctorate from the Music Academy in Weimar for Nike Wagner

Weimar (dpa/th) - The cultural scientist and former director of the Weimar Art Festival, Nike Wagner, has received an honorary doctorate from the "Franz Liszt" University of Music in Weimar. The 77-year-old great-great-granddaughter of the composer and namesake of the university clearly acknowledged his work, activities and attitudes, the university announced. The honorary doctorate was awarded to her on Friday. In doing so, the university also honored her "committed and quite willing to take risks" with the work of her great-grandfather, the composer Richard Wagner, and its after-effects in the Bayreuth Festival.

Nike Wagner was artistic director of the renowned Weimar Art Festival from 2004 to 2013, after which she took over the management of the Bonn Beethoven Festival until the end of 2020. She is cousin of Katharina Wagner, head of the Bayreuth Festival. The Weimar Music Academy is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.
