Thuringia: Inflation at 7.6 percent: inflation rate weakened somewhat

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Despite further increases in energy and food prices, the upward trend in prices in Thuringia has again weakened somewhat. The annual inflation rate was 7.6 percent in July, as reported by the State Statistical Office in Erfurt on Tuesday. Annual inflation was 8.1 percent in June and 8.8 percent in May.

However, the inflation rate remained at a very high level in July. Since the beginning of the year, statisticians have been observing a sharp increase in energy and food prices in Bavaria, which was exacerbated by the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Looking at the year-on-year price change excluding food and energy, it would have been 3.4 percent.

According to this information, energy prices rose by 34.5 percent compared to the previous year. The strongest increases were in heating oil (plus 103.0 percent), district heating (plus 62.9 percent), gas (plus 53.2 percent) and solid fuels (plus 43.2 percent). Fuels increased 22.7 percent year-on-year.

Thuringians also have to dig much deeper into their pockets for food and non-alcoholic beverages. Edible fats and oils (plus 44.5 percent), dairy products and eggs (plus 23.6 percent), bread and cereal products (plus 18.0 percent) as well as meat and meat products (plus 17.9 percent) became more expensive than average.

The discontinuation of the EEG surcharge for electricity on July 1 had an impact on the price development. Electricity became 7.3 percent cheaper. The electricity providers had to pass the reduction in the surcharge on to households in full.
