Thuringia: Jena: Police warn of telephone scams

Jena (dpa/th) - Fraudsters tried to deceive and deceive people over the phone several times over the weekend in Jena. The police said on Sunday that there had been "a large number of so-called shock calls". In the belief that bail would protect a relative from imprisonment, a man handed over cash worth "several 10,000 euros" to unknown telephone scammers, it was said.

The target of the criminals are mostly older people, who are supposed to be robbed of their savings. The perpetrators look for people with old-fashioned-sounding first names, for example in the local telephone book, whom they contact by telephone. According to the police, however, more and more people are informed about the scam over the phone, so fortunately the fraud does not always succeed. In order to prevent further damage, the police asks relatives, especially older people, to inform them of possible fraud attempts by telephone.
