Thuringia: Judgment on the status of the FDP group in the state parliament expected

Weimar (dpa/th) - Thuringia's constitutional judges want to announce their verdict on the status of the FDP group in the state parliament on Wednesday (9 a.m.). The FDP had appealed to the constitutional court in Weimar to finally clarify its status as a group in the state parliament, which has existed since 2021. Among other things, it is about whether the liberals receive sufficient financial resources for their work and whether they can apply for enough current hours in the state parliament.

The FDP lost its parliamentary group status in September 2021 and continued as a parliamentary group with fewer rights. The reason was that MP Ute Bergner had left the parliamentary group and only four MPs were left. At least five MPs are required to form a parliamentary group in Thuringia.

The verdict should also have an impact on Bergner's political work in the state parliament. In July, she wants to have her group "Bürger für Thüringen", which she founded together with three former AfD MPs, recognized by the state parliament. According to a court spokesman, the verdict will primarily relate to the FDP's lawsuit. However, guidelines for dealing with parliamentary groups in general should also be formulated in the grounds for the judgement.
