Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to Migration Minister Dirk Adams (Greens), the Thuringian state government is planning to assume the costs for the renovation of apartments for Ukrainian refugees. The housing industry in the Free State named a number of 3,000 to 4,000 apartments that could be renovated at different levels of effort, Adams said on Tuesday in Erfurt. A corresponding budget for the municipalities should be made available. However, there are still some details to be clarified in the legal basis.
According to Adams, municipalities and counties are pushing for a solution to the problem of housing refugees. A difficult situation has arisen because Ukrainian refugees now belong to the Hartz IV recipients, for whom the municipalities pay for the costs of accommodation. However, the municipalities do not see themselves in a position to bear these costs.
According to Adams, around 3,000 refugees have come to Thuringia every year. By the end of the year, up to 35,000 would have come to the Free State from Ukraine alone, which would exacerbate the housing problem, Adams said.
