Thuringia: Many criminals are always before the court

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The proportion of repeat offenders who are on trial in Thuringia is high. Last year, more than every second person convicted by a court had previously been noticed as a criminal - often more than once, according to figures from the State Statistical Office in Erfurt on Monday. A total of 17,144 men and women were convicted last year. 9,856 of them had been convicted of one or more previous felonies or misdemeanors in previous years.

The proportion of repeat offenders was 58.2 percent. It has increased by two percentage points compared to 2020. Of the repeat offenders, almost half had already been convicted five times or more. 47.0 percent of those with previous convictions had already been in prison at least once.

According to the figures, the proportion of juvenile and adolescent convicts who already had a criminal record is also high at around 47 percent. A quarter of the young criminals have already been convicted three times or more in the past.
