Thuringia: Minister: Population development in Thuringia problematic

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringia's population continued to fall in the past year despite immigration. The number of inhabitants fell by around 12,000 to around 2.11 million people, said Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) on Monday when the statistical yearbook was presented in Erfurt. "It's like losing a typical small Thuringian town every year."

The reason for the decline is the still too low number of births in relation to deaths. According to the data presented by the President of the State Office, Holger Poppehäger, an average of 42 babies were born every day in Thuringia in 2021 - 95 people died every day.
