Thuringia: More postal voters expected in mayoral elections

Erfurt (dpa/th) - For the Thuringian mayoral election on Sunday, the state returning officer expects a higher proportion of postal voters than in 2016. By Wednesday, around 10.9 percent of those entitled to vote in selected municipalities had requested the postal voting documents, according to a statement on Friday. That is more than twice as many as in 2016 (4.6 percent).

A little less than two-thirds of the documents have already been returned - the postal vote volume by the middle of the week had already exceeded the 2016 share at 6.6 percent. At that time it was 3.1 percent. For the 2021 federal election, 32.4 percent of voters in Thuringia voted by post.

In Thuringia, the mostly honorary mayors will be elected in 325 municipalities on Sunday. Around 210,000 Thuringians are entitled to vote.
