Thuringia: More support for caring relatives required

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The association "Wir Pflege" has warned of an increasing burden on caregiving relatives and has called for more advice and support services. "More than half of the people in need of care are already cared for exclusively by relatives," explained board member Sigrun Fuchs. The number of people in need of care in Thuringia has recently increased far more than that of employees in care. This creates "a serious supply gap" that has to be closed by relatives.

According to Fuchs, caring for relatives often leads to physical and psychological stress and loss of income if working hours have to be reduced because of the care. That is why there is a need for advice, support and relief. According to its own statements, the association "Wir Pflege" was founded in 2020 and sees itself as an interest group and self-help for caring relatives.
