Thuringia: motion to vote against the left-wing mayor of Hildburghausen

Hildburghausen (dpa/th) - The mayor of Hildburghausen, Tilo Kummer (left), is faced with a motion to vote out several city council factions. 13 city councilors submitted the application, said Kummer on Friday when asked, thereby confirming an MDR report. It was signed by representatives of the factions of the SPD, AfD, the CDU split-off "Pro Hildburghausen" and the fire brigade. These are all factions except the left. The application, which is to be discussed in the city council for the first time in November, is justified, among other things, with allegedly unfulfilled election promises and poor management of the city administration.

The former left-wing member of the state parliament Kummer was elected mayor of Hildburghausen in March 2020 by a majority of those entitled to vote. Since he was directly elected, he can only be voted out of office directly by the citizens - not by the city council itself. This decides whether there will be a voting procedure. Two thirds of the city councilors - 17 out of 25 - would have to vote for this.

A few weeks ago, an entrepreneur from Hildburghausen submitted a collection of signatures to the mayor, in which Kummer was asked to resign. This emerges from a statement by the left-wing politician on the city's website. In it, Kummer mentions disputes over a supermarket settlement and the rent for a crèche. "I will not allow myself to be made into a tool by individual citizens. For me, the common good comes before the private economic interests of the individual," the statement said. On Friday, Kummer pointed out that just over ten days ago, the city council had approved the 2023 budget for the 12,000-inhabitant city in southern Thuringia with a clear majority.
