Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringia's municipalities repaid part of their debts last year despite the problems with the corona pandemic. The debt of cities, municipalities and districts fell by 113.1 million euros to almost 1.3 billion euros, as announced by the State Statistical Office in Erfurt on Friday. Mathematically, each inhabitant had to bear 615 euros in debt.

According to the figures from the state office, the five independent cities still have outstanding liabilities of 230.5 million euros, 325.3 million euros for the districts and 742.6 million euros for the towns and municipalities belonging to the districts. The country's debt level, on the other hand, continued to rise: by 382.9 million euros in 2021 to almost 16.8 billion euros.
