Erfurt (dpa/th) - Rising costs for personnel, rents and leases, among other things, have pushed up the expenditure of Thuringia's municipalities. In the first half of the year, the cities, municipalities and districts spent 3.1 billion euros, as the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday. That was EUR 223.2 million or 7.7 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.

Accordingly, more money had to be spent on the management and maintenance of the land and buildings. According to the statisticians, expenses for ongoing material expenses rose by 76.9 million euros to 564.3 million euros and were thus 15.8 percent higher than in the first half of 2021.

According to the information, social benefits accounted for 759.5 million euros in the first six months of this year, five percent more than in the same period last year. During this period, personnel costs increased by 42.1 million euros (plus 5.2 percent) to 860 million euros.

The Thuringian municipalities were able to record 3.1 billion euros in revenue in the first half of the year. That was 162.3 million euros or 5.5 percent more, it said. The tax revenues amounted to 898.6 million euros and were thus 162.1 million euros (plus 22 percent) higher. The increase is mainly due to trade tax revenue, which increased by almost 26 percent compared to the same period last year.
