Thuringia: New laboratory building for the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in Jena

Jena (dpa/th) - The Friedrich Loeffler Institute in Jena will be expanded in the next few years with a new building. The four-storey building should be completed by 2025 and improve the conditions for research on bacterial animal diseases and zoonotic pathogens, as the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks announced on Wednesday when the foundation stone was laid in Jena.

According to the information, modern laboratories and rooms for experimental animal husbandry will be built in the new building. The complex will have around 32,000 square meters of floor space. Investments of around 200 million euros are planned for this, it said. For the research work in Jena, the new building must meet high requirements in terms of equipment and safety.

The Friedrich Loeffler Institute conducts research at five locations in Germany on the health and well-being of food-producing animals and the protection of humans from zoonoses. These are infections that can be transmitted reciprocally between animals and humans, for example by bacteria or parasites. The central tasks of the institute are the prevention, diagnosis and control of animal diseases, the improvement of animal husbandry and nutrition as well as the conservation and use of animal genetic resources.
