Thuringia: Night shift in the Leipzig BMW plant called for a warning strike

Leipzig/Chemnitz (dpa/th) - Before the third round of collective bargaining in the metal and electrical industry on Friday, BMW employees in Leipzig want to put pressure on their employers again. The night shift was called to stop work from 3:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., IG Metall said. The employees finally expected a negotiable offer, explained Steffen Reißig from IG Metall Leipzig. "Otherwise, a 1.5-hour warning strike can quickly turn into a day-long walkout."

In the past few days, there had already been such actions in various companies. IG Metall is demanding eight percent higher wages and salaries. Among other things, the employers have promised a tax- and duty-free "inflation compensation premium" of 3,000 euros and a later, as yet unspecified increase in the salary scales. On Friday afternoon, representatives of employees and employers want to meet in Chemnitz for a new round of negotiations. Before that, the union is planning a rally at the venue with employees from several companies.
