Thuringia: Number of slaughter and meat production decreased

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The total number of slaughtering and meat production in Thuringia has decreased slightly. Last year, 280,142 animals were killed, the Thuringian State Office for Statistics announced on Friday. That was 1,773 fewer (0.6 percent) than in the previous year. An exception to this is poultry. As a result, 47,074 tons of meat were produced - a decrease of 1035 tons (2.2 percent) compared to 2021.

This means that the number of slaughterings has fallen for the sixth year in a row, the statistics office said. The largest numerical decrease was in the slaughtered cattle: In 2022, 94,734 animals were killed for consumption, 3,758 fewer than in 2021 (3.8 percent). 3500 of them were cows.

The number of slaughtered goats and sheep also fell, by 200 (3.4 percent) for goats and 57 (6.8 percent) for sheep. Meanwhile, the number of pigs slaughtered has increased slightly: 178,871 pigs were slaughtered last year - 2555 more (1.3 percent) than in the previous year.

According to the statistics office, most of the slaughtering was commercial slaughtering (96.4 percent), the rest was home slaughtering.
