Thuringia: Oberhof on the way to becoming a sustainable winter sports center

Oberhof (dpa/th) - The go-ahead has been given for the construction of a photovoltaic system in the Thuringian winter sports center in Oberhof. The supply of the area with renewable energies is part of the "Sustainable Oberhof" project, on whose progress Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) informed himself on Tuesday.

According to the Thuringian Winter Sports Center Association, the concept includes climate-friendly energy production and supply for the sports facilities. For this purpose, photovoltaic and solar systems are installed on various buildings. Intelligent electricity and distribution grids are intended to ensure that energy is always available where it is needed. Previously unused waste heat is fed back into the energy cycle via heat recovery.

The concept also includes using the sports facilities all year round. In the ice arena, lugers, bobsledders and skeletonists can train and compete all year round. A network of paved routes allows biathletes, Nordic combined and cross-country skiers to train even in summer. The ski jumps can also be used all year round - according to the association, twice as many jumps are completed there in summer than in winter.
