Thuringia: Old part of the former Franciscan monastery visible

Saalfeld (dpa/th) - So far it was walled in, now the public can admire it: A triple window with Gothic pointed arches from around 1250 has been on display in the Saalfeld City Museum since Wednesday. According to the city, the window is probably the oldest surviving component of the former Franciscan monastery in Saalfeld, which houses the city museum, as a spokesman announced on Wednesday at the presentation. In a later reconstruction phase around 1480 it was bricked up.

"I walked past it for thirty years, and for twenty years I was annoyed that the window wasn't visible," said the director of the city museum, Dirk Henning. The Gothic window was uncovered in October 2022 together with the building department of the city of Saalfeld and an engineering office for monument preservation in Bad Blankenburg.

With an exhibition area of around 2700 square meters, the former Franciscan monastery is one of the most important city and cultural history museums in Thuringia. The exposure represents the first step in a major transformation of the museum, Henning said.
