Thuringia: Pandemic: Swimming lessons have been canceled for many children

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Many girls and boys in Thuringia did not learn to swim or did not learn to swim properly during the corona pandemic. In the 2019/20 and 2020/21 school years, 404 state schools did not offer the full curriculum for swimming lessons, according to a response from the state government to a request from state parliamentarian Torsten Wolf (left). That's about 85 percent of all schools in the primary school sector, said Wolf on Monday in Erfurt.

According to the Ministry of Education, around 6,400 students did not receive full swimming lessons in the two school years. Around 3,800 of them counted as non-swimmers today.

Wolf, who is chairman of the education committee in the state parliament, pointed out that swimming lessons are part of the physical education subject in the third grade. As a way of catching up, state and federal financed "learning checks" are being prepared with 10 to 20 lessons. They could be redeemed at spas and clubs.
