Thuringia: Penal system for mentally ill offenders in state sovereignty

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The nationalization of the penal system for mentally ill offenders in Hildburghausen and Mühlhausen should be completed by the end of the year. As announced by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the newly founded Thuringian Center for Forensic Psychiatry started work on Friday. The administrative board based in Erfurt is to organize the transfer of the staff from the previous providers Helios Fachkliniken Hildburghausen GmbH and Ökumenisches Hainich Klinikum gGmbH to the state service.

According to the information, 235 jobs are affected at both clinic locations - from nurses to doctors to social workers. The reorganization of the forensic treatment in the Asklepios Fachklinikum Stadtroda GmbH can only take place after 2032 due to a longer contract period. The so-called correctional facility for the care of mentally ill or addicted offenders was privatized in Thuringia in 2002. In 2019, the country decided to return the prison to state care.
