Thuringia: pent-up demand for traditional festivals after the Corona break

Wutha-Farnroda (dpa/th) - The traditional costume clubs in Thuringia are busy this summer after the compulsory Corona break for home and customs festivals. "There is a lot of catching up to do for unusual events," said the chairman of the national costume association, Knut Kreuch, on Sunday. "We celebrate every weekend." This is not only important for the cohesion of the clubs. They also needed the income from the festivals, for example to be able to run their clubhouses and maintain traditional costumes. The pandemic had brought the clubs to their financial limits here, and some were on the verge of dissolution.

According to Kreuch, there are 90 traditional costume, homeland and customs associations in Thuringia with around 4,500 members, including around 800 children and young people. Many are currently worried about a new corona wave in autumn with renewed cancellations of home festivals. "Especially autumn is the most important time for the clubs, when the fair, thanksgiving and St. Martin's Day are celebrated," said Kreuch, who is the SPD mayor of Gotha in his main job.

In Schönau/Hörsel, a district of Wutha-Farnroda (Wartburg district), the traditional costume association celebrated the "Day of Thuringian Customs" on Sunday. The focus was on baking. Bakers from Schönau served a dozen traditional Thuringian cakes, which were not only enjoyed by the locals. Numerous guests and cyclists also strengthened themselves in a sweet way.
