Thuringia: Pharmacists are allowed to produce the missing fever juice themselves

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In the future, pharmacists in Thuringia will be able to help out with their own recipes if there is a shortage of fever juices. However, this measure is only intended for individual cases, said the State Medical Association and the State Pharmacist Association of Thuringia on Tuesday. The pharmacists should produce the medicine themselves if fever juices containing ibuprofen and paracetamol are no longer available as a ready-made medicine and the child's condition requires this treatment.

"The delivery bottlenecks for fever juices containing paracetamol and ibuprofen are currently causing great concern for health professionals and parents," said the chambers. With this solution, you can at least temporarily help the "little patients", said the President of the State Medical Association, Ellen Lundershausen.

"Unfortunately, the delivery bottlenecks for fever juices are only the tip of the iceberg, and we also have problems with cardiovascular drugs or antibiotics," said Ronald Schreiber, President of the State Chamber of Pharmacists. In many cases there are solutions, such as a different pack size or a different manufacturer. "But the scope is getting narrower and narrower."

According to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, the shortage of fever juices for children in Germany is partly due to the fact that some pharmacies and wholesalers are overstocking and there is a shortage of medicines elsewhere. Another reason for the bottlenecks is the increased number of respiratory infections in children, which increases demand.
