Thuringia: Punishment for 20-year-olds for arson resulting in death

Meiningen (dpa/th) - On Thursday, the juvenile chamber of the district court in Meiningen sentenced a 20-year-old man to 8 years and 6 months for arson causing death and attempted murder. As court spokesman Bernhard Landwehr said, the chamber complied with the requests of the public prosecutor and the defense. The judgment is final.

The Juvenile Chamber saw it as proven that the accused poured out petrol in front of the attic apartment of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and set it on fire. Contrary to what he had assumed, his ex-girlfriend was not in the apartment, and the new boyfriend was able to save himself by jumping out of the window. However, a work colleague of the man who slept in the apartment died when the apartment caught fire.

The case against a co-accused 16-year-old was separated at the beginning of the process. The young woman had been accused of wanting to give the 20-year-old an alibi. She is said to have accompanied him to the scene of the crime. The case against her was dropped because she was ordered to work 60 hours.
